(mean); s. 15 k.;cpl. 69; a. 1 3',, 1 6-pdr., 2 mg.)

Lyndonia-a steel-hulled, steam yseht designed by Charles L. Seabury and built in 1907 at Morris Heights N.J., by the Gas Engine and Power Co. and the Charles Seabury Co.—was acquired by the Navy from the noted Philadelphia publisher Cyrus H. K. Curtis on 5 September 1917. Designated SP-734 and converted for Navy use at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the former yacht was placed in commission on 4 December 1917, Lt. Comdr. John J. McCracken in command.

Lyndonia departed Philadelphia on 22 December bound for Bermuda in company with Venetia (SP-431) and tugs Gypsum Queen (SP-430) and Montauk (SP1213). At 1020 the following day, Lyndonia blew two tubes in her forward boiler; at 1800, all tubes in the after boiler blew as well. As the ship slowly lost steam, she Bignalled Venetua of her plight. Accordingly, at 1820, Montauk passed a hawser to Lyndonia and took her in tow. On Christmas Day, while en route to the Virginia capes, the remaining boiler tubes blew, leaving the ship without any steam whatever.

AB if losing steam were not enough, 10 minutes later, the hawser parted, leaving Lyndonia adrift for nearly 20 minutes before she was again taken in tow. Subsequently, Joseph F. Bellowe (SP-323) pulled Lyndonia to the Norfolk Navy Yard where the yacht then underwent repairs in drydock.

Lyndonia got underway on 4 February for New London Conn., and arrived off the Delaware capes the following day, only to encounter heavy fee floes which blocked further passage. She accordingly returned to Norfolk and remained there into the spring serving as dispatch and mail boat in the Chesapeake Bay. During this tour of duty, on 20 February, the ship was renamed Vega.

On 22 April, Vega sailed for Philadelphia. Arriving there the following day, she was attached to the 4th Naval District and based at Cold Spring Inlet, near Cape May, N.J., for patrols off the New Jersey coast.

On 25 June, Vega sighted a ship resembling a surfaced submarine at long range. Going to general quarters' Vega altered course to close the unidentified craft and flashed recognition signals and challenges in Morse code. The ship would not respond, however, and Vega opened fire with her 6-pounder forward-firing six quick shots before the target hove to. Upon closer investigation, the unidentified ship turned out to be SS Skandeborg, a Danish merchantman bound from Cuba to New York with a general cargo-mostly sugar. No member of the Danish vessel's crew knew Morse code— hence her seeming reluctance to reply to Vega's challenges!

The warship continued her operations out of Cold Spring Inlet into the fall of 1918. During this period, she also undertook local escort duties.

On 28 October, following repairs at the New York Navy Yard, Vega sailed south to Annapolis, where she arrived three days later to commence duties as a training ship for midshipmen at the Naval Academy. She remained in the Annapolis vicinity from 1 November to 4 December before she got underway for Pensacola, Fla., on 5 December.

Reaching Pensacola three days before Christmas 1918 Vega conducted local operations out of Pensacola until 22 March 1919, when she got underway for Philadelphia. The yacht remained at the Philadelphia Navy Yard through the spring and summer months and was decommissioned on Friday, 13 September 1919. She was subsequently sold to Charles H. Crockery, of San Francisco, Calif., on 20 December 1921.

Philanthropy

Cyrus Curtis remains #20 on the list of the richest Americans ever. [10] He was known for his philanthropy to hospitals, museums, universities, and schools. He donated $2 million to the Franklin Institute, for example $1.25 million to the Drexel Institute of Technology for the construction of Curtis Hall and $1 million to the University of Pennsylvania. [1] He also purchased a pipe organ manufactured by the Austin Organ Company that had been displayed at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition of 1926 and donated it to the University of Pennsylvania. It was incorporated into Irvine Auditorium when the building was constructed and is known to this day as the Curtis Organ, one of the largest pipe organs in the world. (The largest is said to reside in Philadelphia's John Wanamaker Building, only twenty blocks east of Irvine Auditorium.) [11] Curtis donated pipe organs to many institutions in Philadelphia and on the day of his funeral, all of those organs were played in his honor.

In memory of his boyhood music teacher, Hermann Kotzschmar, for whom he had been named, Curtis in 1912 donated the Kotzschmar Memorial Organ to Maine's Portland City Hall Auditorium. [12] In Thomaston, Maine, he funded the 1927-29 recreation of Montpelier, the demolished 1795 mansion of Revolutionary War general Henry Knox.

Curtis was a major organizer and backer of the Philadelphia Orchestra, founded in 1900. In its early years, he paid off its debts anonymously. Curtis's daughter, Mary Louise Curtis Bok, founded Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music in 1924 and dedicated it to her father.

Why Vega Is Running

The career prosecutor believes Krasner has gone too far to reform the city's criminal justice system, and says Krasner's prosecutorial approach has contributed to Philadelphia deadly surge in shootings since the beginning of 2020.

"Four years ago, Larry Krasner promised us justice that would make us safer. But his failure to address violent crime, and his reckless approach to reform has made Philadelphia more dangerous today than before he took office," Vega said.

The city is in the midst of a gun violence crisis unparalleled in recent decades. Last year, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, 499 people were killed in Philadelphia, the second highest total of the last 60 years. In 2021, homicides are on pace to reach the highest total ever. Shootings are also very high in historical context, according to police department data.

Krasner disputes any direct link that his opponents say exists between his reforms and the gun violence.

"In 2017, Larry made promises to upend a broken system, and unlike most politicians, he has kept those promises. He has reduced unnecessary incarceration, implemented diversion programs that actually address the needs of the community, pushed for investments and programs that will serve the needs of Philadelphia, and held people who are causing harm accountable," Krasner's campaign manager, Evans, said. "He has actions he can point to and be proud of, not just empty words."

Vega said he too will continue to push for better policing in Philadelphia, despite what Krasner says. Vega does have the support of police unions, at least when it comes to campaign funding. The two unions representing city officers and Pennsylvania state police have contributed $12,600 and $12,000, respectively, to Vega's campaign.

Vega said wants every police officer to wear a body camera and every police vehicle to have a dash cam video. He also said he believes that the current rule allowing cops to move out of Philadelphia is one that should end.

"I disagree with the deal they made that officers after five years can move to the suburbs. I think if you're a cop in Philly, you live in Philly, that's where you buy a home, your kids are educated, be part of the community," Vega said. "And I know the people will turn crazy with that attitude I have. But, you know, that's the way I feel."

The debate will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. and moderated by NBC10 and KYW Newsradio reporters. It will also air live on NBC10.com and the NBC10 app as well as NBC10's Roku TV and Apple TV apps. It can be heard live on KYW Newsradio at 103.9 FM and 1060 AM.

The winner of the May primary will be the presumptive winner of the November general election, considering Democrats outnumber Republicans by a roughly 7-to-1 margin among the Philadelphia electorate.

Kurjerinis laivas

Kurjerinis laivas (rus. посыльное судно angl.

XX a. pradžioje kurjeriniai laivai dar buvo naudojami, pvz., USS „Vega“ (SP-734).

Basics of Vega

Volatility measures the amount and speed at which price moves up and down, and can be based on recent changes in price, historical price changes, and expected price moves in a trading instrument. Future-dated options have positive Vega while options that are expiring immediately have negative Vega. The reason for these values are fairly obvious. Option holders tend to assign greater premiums for options expiring in the future than to those which expire immediately.

Vega changes when there are large price movements (increased volatility) in the underlying asset, and falls as the option approaches expiration. Vega is one of a group of Greeks used in options analysis. They are also used by some traders to hedge against implied volatility. If the vega of an option is greater than the bid-ask spread, then the option is said to offer a competitive spread. The opposite is also true. Vega also lets us know how much the price of the option could swing based on changes in the underlying asset's volatility.

InvestorBrandNetwork Announces The Dealmaker Show Interview with PlantX Life Inc. CEO Julia Frank

LOS ANGELES, May 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via InvestorWire – InvestorBrandNetwork (“IBN”), a multifaceted financial news and publishing company for private and public entities, today announces that Julia Frank, CEO of PlantX Life Inc. (CSE: VEGA) (Frankfurt: WNT1) (OTCQB: PLTXF), the company behind the one-stop shop for everything plant-based, recently appeared on The Dealmaker Show, a fast-paced and high-energy forum hosted by bestselling author Oren Klaff. To hear the full podcast, visit The Dealmaker Show. During the interview, Klaff inquired about the early days of PlantX, Frank’s background as an executive with some of the world’s largest automotive corporations, and how the plant-based movement is continuing to gain steam for individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. “I used to live in Miami and the Bahamas. That’s actually where I met the founder [of PlantX], Sean Dollinger. Sean is super experienced he’s built multiple e-commerce platforms and companies. He’s been in the e-commerce space for over 20 years,” Frank explained. “He told me about his vision to found a company that provides a one-stop shop for everything plant-based. … When I met Sean … I was actually working for BMW for five years … but I always preferred to ride a bike. … I’m not really passionate about cars and the automotive industry. … I was already thinking that it was time to leave and do something else, and when Sean told me about his idea for PlantX, it really sounded like a company I would be passionate about.” “When you are living a 100% plant-based lifestyle, of course there are companies out there that offer plant-based products. But let’s say you’re looking for a plant-based meat product or plant-based cosmetics or even plant-based pet foods, you would have to check on multiple different websites. There was not a one-stop shop like Amazon for plant-based products where you can basically find any plant-based product available on the market,” Frank added. “Sean founded the company in 2019 … and our website went live at the end of March 2020, which was basically the first month of lockdown from the pandemic. … We set up an e-commerce business that delivers plant-based products to your doorstep in the times of a lockdown. … It was unplanned right timing.” “I invite everyone to try out a plant-based lifestyle and give it a shot. Maybe it works. Even if you decide to eat your steak three or four times per week and decide to be plant-based or vegetarian the other days, it’s totally fine,” Frank continued. “I just think, in general, we have to be more cautious about what we put into our bodies and also how we handle the whole meat industry. … I’m convinced that the plant-based market is not just a temporary trend. … It’s important to do in life what you’re really passionate about and what you love, and I’m really happy that I can do what I love and also help other people.” Throughout the interview, Frank discussed the growth of the plant-based movement and how PlantX is working to support the industry by creating a resource for this community of like-minded individuals to celebrate and promote health and well-being. About PlantX Life Inc. As the digital face of the plant-based community, PlantX's platform is the one-stop shop for everything plant-based. The company uses its digital platform to build a community of like-minded consumers and, most importantly, provide education.
